Life-Change Story

For Belinda, marijuana became her personal de-stressor. She shares, “I used pot to “switch gears” from work to home. It made me mellow so I could be a more relaxed and attentive parent. I just asked God to go along with it as it wasn’t hurting anyone. It had been my companion for 20+ years.”

After the rude awakening that this could not go on, she started going to Recovery for Life meetings where she was given the tools she needed to enjoy sobriety.

“One day in 2004, God revealed a simple truth to my soul that was the turning point for me: pot was an idol in my life.”

Belinda knew that God wanted her to turn to Him as her ultimate de-stressor, yet she had put Him in second place to her marijuana buzz.

She reports, “It’s been seven years now since I smoked pot. God was patient with me as He carried me through the steps I personally needed to take with Him to desire the life-changing freedom He wanted for me. I praise Him for His gentle guidance to a piercing truth. He alone is my God and I’ve never been more content in my life.

Linda reports from our new program in South Norfolk: “We distributed about 1,000 flyers to the residences within several blocks of our meeting place. Our average per meeting was 7 in June. Since we put the flyers out, we have had 5 new people attend. Recently, a man came in who was completely inebriated. He returned a month later sober, and on his way to rehab. After 5 months, he has come back looking great! We are very pleased with how the group facilitation is progressing.” There is a great hope for people in S. Norfolk!

Preparing Tomorrow’s Recovery Leaders

Our newest Intern, Miranda shares: “Thursday night, I attended the R4L meeting in South Norfolk. I found it quite interesting. When I walked in everyone was very friendly and introduced themselves. Members shared how they had made it through the week. The facilitator helped the group talk, share their feelings, and give feedback. The group helped me open up about being an “enabler.” I could sense that no one was there to judge.” Miranda continues to share her enthusiasm about working with us on several projects through our relationship with Bryant Stratton College.
