Dear Friends,
I have never written and sent a letter quite like this before, but I have just spoken with some dear friends who are professionals and business people and they are concerned about the financial future of the Recovery for the City program.
One man said to me. . . "Here is why I am concerned: The economic distress and turmoil impacting America could put thousands of non-profit charities out of business in the next 180 days. Already, Wall Street is squeezing the retail industry. Government bailouts are holding many industries together by the narrowest of margins. Banking, insurance, the automotive industry, and scores of manufacturing businesses are up against the ropes.
He went on to say. . . . "In this economic climate, people want to know the gifts they give to ministry are having maximum impact."
My mind raced. . . thinking about all of the events and ministries Recovery for the City has helped; seven weekly group meetings, addiction and dependency treatment, AMP’D youth program, powerful messages for men and women, our new Recovery Kids children’s program, Transitions housing for women in treatment or suffering from abuse saoon to open, sponsorships for those dealing with addictions and dependancy. . . and much, more.
"Yes", I said, "Recovery for the City is having a major impact in the lives of hundreds of people. Not just in the day to day, moment by moment encouragement and hope that we provide to those battling addiction in our area, but through key ministry partnerships, we extend our reach far beyond Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach through those who have completed our program and moved on to other parts of the country! We have people in the military in foreign countries who are teaching recovery principles to their counterparts. Recovery for the City truly reaches out and touches lives across the country and around the world!"
"Good" he said. "Now, what we can DO to encourage your supporters to really put the Recovery for the City finances over the top by year end?"
I told him about a donor who has asked to remain anonymous who has offered a year-end matching gift to honor his younger sister who had recently died from alcoholism and drug dependency.
He said, "I like this idea. If we could get a few of our donors to pool their gifts into a "challenge fund" all of your other donors will give, knowing that their support will be doubled dollar-for-dollar. I will provide the next $1,000 to the year-end matching fund!"
I scarcely believed it. . . and the more we have prayed about it since that early matching gift last month, the more we are convinced that this Year End Challenge Fund will be a tool the Lord will use to encourage supporters who have never given to join the team. And I believe that many faithful donors, like you, will send a special gift to help Recovery for the City take full advantage of this amazing opportunity.
A friend called me and wanted to go to lunch. I hadn’t seen him in a while. He was one of the first participants of the Recovery program in 1999. He had a habit back then of buying cases of non-alcoholic beer, pouring a can at a time out and filling them with vodka, drinking all evening every day. No one knew. . . Then he began our program, eventually, after a year of sobriety, became a facilitator and even helped me compile one of our manuals!
Anyway, there we were, at the Sushi restaurant, and he, with a heart-filled gratitude, explained how his family had received a "little bit" of money and he wanted to share some of it with R4CI. He handed me a check which is a huge sacrifice of thanks for this family. I feel so honored that they chose us!
So far, we have received $19,560 towards this matching gift. AMAZING! This truly could be Recovery for the City’s Christmas Miracle!
WILL YOU HELP US BY MAKING A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS, OR YEAR-END GIFT TO HELP RECOVERY FOR THE CITY? Believe me, I understand that you are being faced with real financial challenges, maybe the worst in our lifetime. Let me remind you of something. . .
". . . but God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind!!" I am determined to act in FAITH, not in FEAR. . . .and I need YOUR help.
We have taken up this challenge, and I am reaching out to every current and past supporter of Recovery for the City and asking everyone to make a special year-end gift. The size of your gift is not as important as your participation. Every dollar you donate will be matched by our YEAR END MATCHING CHALLENGE FUND. THIS TRULY COULD BE A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE FOR RECOVERY FOR THE CITY!
I am praying you will provide a special gift of $50 or $100 or more to help Recovery for the City take advantage of this Christmas Miracle. Remember that your gift will be doubled, matched dollar for dollar by our Challenge Fund Committee. Please join us in PRAYER for 100% participation. Wouldn’t that be amazing?? I am asking you to help me with one of the following as soon as you can:
- Click here to include your tax-deductible gift and it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by our Christmas Miracle Challenge Fund.
- Pray. I am praying that every single person who opens this mailing will send something. No gift is too small. Your participation will mean so much our team. It is critical to our success.
Without your support, and the support of dear friends like you, it would not be impossible for us to continue to ministry to hundreds of families dealing with addiction and recovery each and every week, let alone grow in our effectiveness. Please give as much as you can during this Christmas Season. May God bless you for your supporter during this critical time.
Gratefully,
Dr. Paul Hardy
